Sanity is a state of mind. You see a man walking down the road talking to himself, and you think to yourself "Poor man must be out of it. Crazies are everywhere nowadays." If you had taken two seconds to look closer you would see that he isn't crazy but talking on a phone, one with an earpiece and microphone on a chord leading to his pocket.
A Rose for Emily, is written to make you think of a crazy woman. She keeps to herself and sleeps next to a dead man. Obviously crazy right? But say we take a closer look, and upon inspection that mans will states his last requests. Knowing that nobody would allow his requests she keeps to herself, because her love is so profound that she would do anything for this man.
Things that are odd to us may seem completely normal to the person doing it. We as americans dont eat dog, but in some countries dog is a delicacy. Its all in our minds. We choose whether or not to accept a thing or idea. We as a society need to learn to accept the differences in others. Now I understand that sleeping next to a dead body is a bit of an extreme circumstance, but what better way to show someone something than to take it to its farthest extreme.
